New Caney's Charm: A Sublime Intersection of Nature and Innovation
Historical Background:
New Caney, located in southeastern Montgomery County, Texas, has a rich history dating back to the 1860s. Originally known as Presswood, after pioneers Austin and Sarah Waters Presswood, the area was first settled for cattle raising on the open range. The John Wesley Robinson family, another set of early settlers, contributed significantly to the community's growth by establishing a gristmill, steam cotton gin, and general store on Caney Creek. A significant turning point in New Caney's history was the arrival of the Houston, East, and West Texas Railway in 1877 or 1878, establishing the town as a key shipping point for livestock. It was initially named Caney Station, derived from the dense canebrakes on Caney Creek. The town's name was later changed to New Caney due to the existence of another Texas town named Caney. By 1884, New Caney had a population of sixty, along with four steam sawmills and a general store. Its economy was primarily based on shipping cotton, syrup, and hogs. The town's population and economy continued to grow with the lumber industry, shipping timber products including mining props.
By the mid-20th century, the town had expanded to include about forty dwellings, three schools, two sawmills, a railroad station, and approximately twelve other businesses. The population had grown to 604 by 1969 and further increased to 2,771 by 1971. By 1989, New Caney had expanded significantly, including developments like the New Caney Heights and Caney Creek Estates subdivisions. The area's proximity to Houston contributed to its rapid growth in the 1980s, making it a part of the larger Houston metropolitan area.
